About the Award Cornwall Outdoors Training Offer:-

The various courses are briefly outlined below, it is
by no means a full description of each award but it should be
sufficient to give a feel for the awards:-

South West Mountain and Moorland Leader Training Scheme –
Summer Moorland Walking Leader Award |

The
South West Mountain and Moorland Leader Training Scheme of training
and assessment had been approved under the MLTB Local Accreditation
System (1997).
The award
covers the Mountain and Moorland areas of the South West and the
Brecon Beacons – excluding exposed ridges, gullies and
steep ground.
The
award is used extensively within the South West by local
authorities, voluntary organisations, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award,
schools, colleges and establishments of further and higher
education, as a means of ensuring that staff leading groups are
competent |

Summer Moorland Camping Leader Award |

 |
The Moorland Camping Leader award builds on the skills and experience
gained during the Moorland Walking Leader Award.
The syllabus content
covers such things as :- Leadership, Planning, Group
Management, Organisation and Responsibilities, Equipment and
its Usage, General Navigation, Night Navigation, Incident
Procedures, Access and the Conservation of the Environment,
Remote Supervision, Campsite selection and safety. |

Successful completion of assessment enables approval for the
leadership of Moorland Walking Expeditions and Camping in
Summer Conditions (inc. ‘Wild’ Camping). |

South West Mountain and Moorland Leader Training Scheme –
Coastal and Countryside Walking Leader Award |

|
 |
The Coastal and Countryside areas of the South West provide
rich opportunities for individuals to appreciate a sense of
wilderness, explore their environment and undertake
adventurous journeys in stimulating landscapes.
This is the foundation level of the South West Mountain and
Moorland Leader Training Scheme and is designed to provide a
basic level of knowledge, understanding and experience
sufficient to lead groups in ‘summer conditions’, who are
moving and learning in coastal and countryside
environments. (non moorland or wild country).
This award along with the Coastal and Countryside Camping
Endorsment is ideal for those who wish to Lead the
expedition section of the Bronze or Silver Duke of
Edinburgh’s award.

Mountain Leader Training England – Mountain Leader
(Summer) Award Training

The mountains of the UK are remote, technical and exposed to
harsh and unpredictable weather.
This makes them a hazardous
place for novice walkers and the Mountain Leader Award is
designed to help responsible leaders who wish to operate in
mountainous terrain in summer conditions. Mountain Leader
courses develop your group management skills, the ability to
navigate in all conditions, the ability to deal with
mountain hazards (including steep ground) and increase your
awareness of environmental issues. There is an expedition
element to the scheme.
At the end of this training course you will have a personal
action plan that will guide you through the consolidation
phase of the scheme (usually a period of at least twelve
months) before your assessment. |

Mountain Leader Training England – Single Pitch
Award Training

This award enables holders to supervise people on single
pitch crags and climbing walls. To gain this award you need
more than just good personal climbing skills. The course
will teach you about safe group management, indoors and out,
crag etiquette, environmental responsibilities and more. You
will Learn to become an effective supervisor, encouraging
others to enjoy their climbing safely, whilst also improving
some of your own climbing skills.
At the end of this training course you will have a personal
action plan that will guide you through the consolidation
phase of the scheme (usually a period of at least six
months) before your assessment

Cornwall County Council – Climbing Wall Supervisor Award |

This award is a County Council locally approved award for
those who wish to run climbing wall sessions within the
County Council – the award does not allow the instruction of
Abseiling or Lead Climbing.
The Course Syllabus includes such things as:-
Warm ups, Games on and off the wall, Use of helmets,
harnesses, tying / clipping in, Personal belaying, The safe
teaching of belaying, Using a variety of belaying equipment,
Teaching of climbing, coaching and progression, Equipment
care, management and use of equipment, checking, collection
and storage, Risk assessments, Construction walls and fixed
equipment, Management of walls including checking before and
after session. |

Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme – Levels 1 &
2 |

 |
Cornwall Outdoors are a provider Centre for all MIAS awards
as well as Cycle Maintenance and personal skills awards
(Gears Awards).
The purpose of the Mountain Bike Instructors Award Scheme is
to promote the safe enjoyment of mountain biking in an
off-road environment.
The scheme provides training and assessment in the technical
and group management skills required by those who wish to
lead groups in a variety of off-road environments in the UK
other than in winter conditions. It introduces training,
experience and assessment in a variety of testing conditions
in off-road country.

Successful completion of assessment enables approval for the
following:
Level 1
- leadership of mountain biking in Country Parks, Canal
Towpaths and non-wilderness off road rides where help is
almost immediately available.
Level 2
– as per level 1 plus low level rides on recognised
bridleways below 599 metres in wilderness terrain
.

Mountain Medicine – First Aid for the Outdoors

Cornwall Outdoors are a provider centre of Mountain Medicine
courses.
Mountain Medicine has been registered with the Health &
Safety Executive in the UK (Reg. No. 991/91) since 1991 as
an approved provider of First Aid at Work training
and examination.
Mountain Medicine operates a wide range of "occupational
first aid" and more specialist courses throughout the UK
and Republic of Ireland.

Our courses are recognised by the Health & Safety Executive,
covering all aspects of the HSE First Aid at Work (or
appointed persons) with additional elements which are
appropriate to the mountain and outdoor environment.
These are practically based courses designed to meet the
needs of those who teach or lead groups in the outdoors. |

Cornwall County Council – Archery Leader Award

This is a foundation level County Council locally approved
award for those who wish to run Archery sessions within the
County Council.
The Course Syllabus includes such things as:-
Different types of Archery, Equipment Used and It’s
Maintenance, Range Layouts, Warming Up Techniques, Safety
Ground Rules, A typical Teaching Plan (how to run your
session), Practice and Demonstrate your personal archery
skills. |
